Brief
In this project, my task was to design the book cover for Hans Christian Andersen's story, The Little Mermaid, with an emphasis on accurately representing the storyline, rather than the Disney movie adaptation.
Challenge
The primary challenge was to convey the story's essence from the author's perspective, distinct from the Disney movie adaptation. It was imperative to represent the tale's tone, which is widely recognized as a fairy tale and not typically viewed as a sorrowful narrative.
Goal
My aim was to capture the darker themes that are inherent in Hans Christian Andersen's writing. I aimed to portray the profound sense of loss that the little mermaid experiences in the story.
Unique Solution
To address this challenge, I utilized a visual metaphor of ripped paper to symbolize the little mermaid's loss of voice. This motif was also carried over to the author's section of the book cover, providing a cohesive design that effectively captured the darker themes of the story.
